Jerviss-Fethke is located in Muskegon Michigan. We are surrounded by Lake Michigan, Muskegon Lake, Mona Lake, and Bear Lake. We insure many boats here. Sometimes you can insure your boat on your home policy, sometimes you need a separate policy, it depends on the type, size and horsepower of your boat. Here are some key benefits; our coments and concerns are noted.
- Liability - This protects you from incidents you are legally liable for, such as damage you do to someone else's boat, dock, or if you hit someone in the water. Note: Sometimes you can extend the liability from your home insurance policy which is usually less expensive than a stand alone policy, check with your agent to see if you qualify.
- Medical Payments - This works similarly to your home insurance medical payments. Check to be sure water skiing injuries are included. Sometimes there is an extra coverage and fee. Note: If you extend coverage from your home insurance policy, you should increase your limits. Typically 1,000 comes with it, you can increase to 5,000 for very little money.
- Physical Damage - Most policies provide coverage on a type of special form basis. Your boat is covered for damage, except what is specifically excluded. Typical exclusions are intentional damage, wear and tear, vermin, etc. Note: Check with your agent to verify your coverages.
- Salvage coverage- Check the limits of your salvage coverage because this varies widely by company. Typically this is not very much. Sometimes you can buy more, sometimes not. Coverage to recover your boat from the bottom of the lake can vary from 5% of the boat limit you insure to to the full cost to recover it regardless of the limit you carry on your boat.
